My first interaction with ECFS was an Early Childhood Family Education class. I'd just moved to Minnesota with my three-year-old son and my infant daughter and was completely overwhelmed. Though I felt like I'd had an incredible parenting model in my own upbringing, I was not prepared for how emotionally demanding and confusing it all was. Plus, it was my first experience staying at home as full-time caregiver. ECFE classes were like beacons in the night. The parent educators were simply the most generous, intensely knowledgeable people, and what I've learned from them has dramatically changed the way I approach parenting. And the environment, the child educators, all of it gave me so much to take home and incorporate in my family's world. The experience has been life-changing not only for me, but for my children.
I've taken probably 20 ECFE classes, have worked on both the ECFS Advisory Council and the ECFS Foundation. I just don't feel I can possibly give back to this organization what I've gotten from it. Mostly, I'm proud of the fact that we're increasing awareness of the importance of early childhood and family education. I can't think of a more significant contribution I can give to my community.
